Supermercados Talpa Modernizes Operations with New ERP Deployment and AML Mobile Computers

Objective

Supermercados Talpa is a fast-growing Hispanic grocery chain in the Southeastern United States. The grocery chain is supported by Talpa Group Holdings, a business enterprise of grocery, distribution, transportation, and meat processing businesses. The company’s leadership team recognized the need to modernize its operations for future growth. Rather than continuing to rely on disconnected systems and manual processes, Talpa launched a company-wide digital transformation centered around their new ERP system Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central.

The initiative began with the company’s distribution center, transportation company, and corporate operations, with plans to expand to additional business units in the coming years. To support the new ERP platform, Talpa needed rugged mobile computers that could deliver reliable wireless connectivity, fast performance, and the flexibility to support multiple workflows across distribution, retail, and food processing environments.

During the initial rollout with a previous vendor, the handheld computers originally selected for the project struggled with connectivity issues, inconsistent performance, and limited product availability, prompting the company to evaluate alternative solutions.

Solution

After meeting AML at the MODEX Trade Show hosted by MHI, Talpa trialed AML’s new handheld device, the PDX10. Very quickly, Talpa recognized these devices as a better fit for its warehouse operations. Employees immediately embraced the device thanks to its compact design, responsive performance, large display, and dependable wireless connectivity.

As additional business units transition to the new ERP platform, Talpa also plans to expand its use of AML devices. The AML Scepter Pro is currently being evaluated for the company’s USDA-regulated meat processing facility, where employees perform high-volume barcode scanning in demanding cold-chain environments and require larger displays to support traceability and production workflows.

Throughout implementation, AML engineers worked directly with Talpa and its software provider Insight Works to optimize scanner configuration and performance, ensuring seamless integration with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central and the WMS module Warehouse Insight.

Summary

Today, AML mobile computers have become an important part of Talpa’s long-term technology strategy. Since deployment, the company has experienced:

  • scanning box with Scepter ProReliable Wi-Fi connectivity throughout warehouse operations
  • Faster and more consistent performance within Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central and the accompanying WMS module
  • Improved employee satisfaction and reduced workflow interruptions
  • A scalable hardware platform for future warehouse, retail, and food processing deployments
  • Responsive engineering and technical support throughout implementation

According to Supermercados Talpa Inventory Manager Mark Alar, one of the most immediate improvements was user satisfaction.

“The guys loved the first PDX10. We knew immediately that this was going to be the direction we needed to go for scanning.” – Mark Alar

Talpa also praised AML’s willingness to work alongside its software partner to solve integration challenges.

“Wayne and Rick were very, very helpful… they figured out exactly what barcode configurations were necessary for the software and even released new firmware that improved the scanner—not just for us, but for future customers.” – Mark Alar

As far as advice to other companies considering AML, Mark said to call the publicly listed AML number and see how fast you can get help.

“I think somebody would be very impressed at how quickly they actually get a real knowledgeable person who can help them.” – Mark Alar

Looking ahead, Talpa expects to continue standardizing on AML devices as their new ERP system is deployed across additional businesses within the organization.
