Cold Storage Ready: AML’s Scepter Pro Powers Langham Logistics’ Mobile Workflow

Objective

Langham Logistics, a third-party logistics (3PL) provider specializing in pharmaceutical and life sciences warehousing, needed a reliable mobile computing solution to support its growing cold chain operations. With multiple temperature-controlled facilities—including environments ranging from controlled room temperature to deep freezer storage—the company required durable barcode scanning devices that could perform consistently across varying temperature conditions.

Langham Logistics has implemented Manhattan Associates’ WMS in all their facilities. To connect to their WMS, the mobile computers need to be able to make a remote desktop connection. Also, keeping in mind a future transition to Manhattan’s native Android app, their mobile computers also need to be compatible with the latest software requirements.

As Langham Logistics continues to expand their cold storage operations, rapid deployment of new devices was also a key factor in considering a new mobile computer solution. Langham Logistics recently opened a 367,000-sq-ft cold-storage warehouse in Indianapolis, IN. According to Langham Logistics, their controlled-temperature storage facilities range from controlled room temperatures at 25℃ to frozen temperatures -35℃.

Solution

Langham Logistics migrated from legacy devices to AML’s cold storage ready StrikerX mobile computer and later AML’s Scepter Pro devices with a larger 5.5” display. Both AML mobile computers are powered by the Qualcomm® QCS6490 processor running at speeds up to 2.7GHz., integrated with a Wi-Fi 6E radio, and are capable of long-range barcode scanning. The mobile devices are preloaded with software applications that make setup, configuration, and deployment a breeze. The devices were deployed across multiple facilities, including cold storage environments where workers frequently transition between temperature zones. Langham Logistics stated their previously unreliable and complex mobile device management system was replaced with AML Device Manager, simplifying setup and accelerating deployment timelines.

Summary

Since deploying AML devices, Langham Logistics has seen strong performance across several key areas:

  • The Langham Logistics team noted that the StrikerX and Scepter Pro performed well in temperatures as low as -35℃.
  • Improved scanning range, with Code 128 barcode reads up to 30 feet and QR codes at greater distances
  • Faster and simpler device deployment with AML Device Manager

“What I’ve seen with AML Device Manager is that it’s super simple and intuitive — there’s not much out there that’s easier than this,” Warehouse Systems Manager Jeff McClelland said.

  • Reliable Wi-Fi connectivity across the facility
  • Seamless integration with Manhattan Associates’ WMS via remote desktop

“The units performed at or better than the devices we had before. We’ve been very happy with them,” McClelland said.

Speaking of this support experience with AML, Jeff said he can easily reach out to the AML team and receive answers in a timely manner.
