Using Mobile Computers with Android Operating System

Migrating from Windows to Android

Despite a long and persistent reign, Microsoft’s family of mobile computer embedded operating systems has finally surpassed their end-of-life date. The true “end of life” date for most Windows Embedded operating systems was February 28, 2022.

Essentially, this means that as of that day, Windows Embedded OS is no longer available to OEMs for use on their mobile devices. Any mobile computers running on Windows Embedded OS will need to be phased out now that the operating system is no longer supported. Another operating system must now swoop in to fill that void in the market, and that is an immense role left to be filled.

Enter the Android Operating System. Popularized by consumer mobile cell phones, this now well-known OS offers a surprising amount of versatility across a multitude of devices. The open-source nature of the system allows for the development of an endless variety of applications, including applications for rugged mobile computers.

Thanks to its incredible capabilities, high degrees of customization, and ease of use, Android OS stands as the only true alternative operating system that is applicable for industrial mobile computers. Its compatibility with dedicated Android Package Kits (), browser-based programs, and older text-based or “telnet” applications make Android the logical choice for industrial mobile applications.

With this market shift in mind and the technology readily available, we have incorporated Android OS into all of our currently available AML products. This has allowed us to deliver higher performance, an intuitive interface, and a sleek user experience in our handheld barcode scanners.

Android Mobile Computers Made by AML

Our very own mobile computers, including the AML Striker barcode scanner, were specifically designed to utilize the Android operating system. Knowing that the Android OS was the only natural progression for mobile computers, combined with the ever-growing list of available Android software, the move to Android was a no-brainer for AML’s handheld mobile devices.

To keep up with this development in the field of mobile computing, consider upgrading your fleet of devices with Android-based handheld barcode scanners like the Striker. While the switch may seem like a daunting move to make, our highly skilled technicians are here to help you every step of the way as you integrate Android barcode scanners into your daily operations.

The performance benefits offered by Android-powered devices far outweigh the convenience of sticking with outdated legacy devices any longer. For more details on the importance of migrating to Android sooner than later, read our in-depth process overview here.

The Striker comes preloaded with our DC Suite software package: a collection of apps developed in-house exclusively for use with AML’s Android mobile computers. DC Suite applications allow users to start working as soon as the device is out of the box and the battery is charged. In addition, Striker comes preloaded with AML Setup, a utility client that works in conjunction with a desktop application to quickly deploy multiple devices simply by scanning a barcode. The AML Scepter Android mobile computer can also be preloaded with DC Suite upon customer request.
