Georgia-based 3PL Provider Porter Logistics Deploys StrikerX Mobile Computer in Cold Storage Facility

Objective

3PL Provider Porter Logistics recently expanded into cold chain logistics to accommodate food, pharmaceutical, and chemical industry clients. With an additional 145,000 square feet of cold storage space, it’s imperative that their team can efficiently keep track of all inventory processed across the warehouse in more extreme temperatures.

mobile computer in cold storageTo maintain consistency across devices used in the warehouse, ideally the mobile computers used in dry storage areas also need to function properly in the cold storage area. As noted in a previous case study, Porter Logistics recently transitioned to AML’s StrikerX mobile computers. StrikerX is compatible with their software provider Extensiv 3PL System. The same 3PL software would be used in the cold storage area as well.

According to a Porter Logistics press release, their new cold storage facilities are designed to accommodate a wide range of temperatures, including refrigerated offerings between 35F and 40F as well as freezer storage as low as -20°F. Porter Logistics aimed to implement StrikerXs across upcoming cold storage sites, contingent on their ability to perform in extreme temperature environments.

Solution

AML’s StrikerX mobile computer for cold storage has an extremely power efficient Qualcomm® QCS6490 processor, dual cell battery technology that is intrinsically more resilient at low temperatures, and sufficient environmental protection for cold storage facilities. To confirm software compatibility and high performance standards, the StrikerX rugged mobile computer was tested at Porter Logistics’ new cold storage facility in Atlanta.

“The StrikerXs are holding up great operating in temperatures as low as -20F with no degradation in performance,” Porter Logistics President John Foshee said.

Porter Logistics is using the Extensiv software application in conjunction with StrikerX mobile computer for complex, multi-line case picking, inventory cycle counting, and high volume put away in both the chiller and freezer.

Summary

Porter Logistics President John Foshee said the StrikerX works with Extensiv very well and specifically highlighted the fast support response times from the AML team. As Porter Logistics continues their expansion in the cold storage space, the StrikerX mobile computer will be deployed in those temperature-controlled facilities. While there may be other “freezer-rated” devices on the market today, the more cost-effective StrikerX delivers on power and performance in cold storage environments.
