Connecting the M5900 to Your PC

Make sure your M5900 Series Portable Data Terminal is powered on and the date and time are configured.
If your communications are already configured, continue on to Sending programs and lookup data to the M5900
Arrow Down to Settings, Press ENTER, Arrow Down to PC Uplink Settings, Press ENTER




If you are using the Serial cable, set the Port to RS232 and Save Settings, press ESC to return to the Settings menu.




Otherwise, if you are using the USB cable, set the Port to USB Slave and Save Settings, press ESC to return to the Settings menu.




Use ESC to return to the device's main menu.

Now to configure your PC to connect to your M5900:
See Installing the M5900 Program Generator on your PC on how to get the M5900 Program Generator if you do not already have it on your PC.
First, if you are using a USB Slave connection, connect your M5900 to your PC using your USB cable.
Open the M5900 Program Generator application on your PC by double clicking the M5900 Programmer icon on your desktop.

Just click on New Program to get past the first screen

Select Tools, M5900 Serial Port Configuration

The "Configure Device Options" dialog will pop up.
Your com port will automatically default to the COM port used by the USB serial gadget if your M5900 is connected to your PC via USB.
If you are intending on using USB, simply plug your M5900 into the USB port while this dialog is open and the COM port should change to the correct port and COM status should change to Ready. If COM Status says Ready, then the COM port exists. When configuring for RS232, make sure you have selected the correct COM port among the COM ports listed in the COM Port dropdown.
When finished, be sure to select Save Settings.
Your PC and your device are now configured to communicate with each other.
